The National Trust began the UK’s biggest ever plant hunt today with gardeners and volunteers at Killerton, Devon began a survey that will cover tens of thousands of plants at more than 80 National Trust gardens.
Each plant will be photographed, it’s position will be recorded by GPS and it will be identified by an expert. All the data will be introduced into central database enabling experts to identify which plants, trees or heritage vegetables need to be propagated enabling the Trust to replenish existing collections and make plants available to other properties.
At the moment the National Trust has records for around only 5% of their plants but it is hoped that this survey will increase this figure to around 75% in the next three years.
