A scheme to vaccinate badgers against bovineTB (bTB), announced by the Government yesterday (19/03/09), has been welcomed by The Wildlife Trusts.
Stephanie Hilborne, chief executive for The Wildlife Trusts, said: “Today’s news is a significant step forward and a positive move.
“We know this trial will not provide an immediate answer to combating bovineTB but it is a very welcome initiative. Looking at how the deployment of injecting vaccines works should help with the long journey we have ahead in finding the best solutions – and we must remember that there is no single solution to dealing with this disease.
“What is important throughout this five year plan, and beyond as more vaccines are developed, is for all parties to keep a strong focus on control measures and biosecurity.”
The Wildlife Trusts is keen for the farming community, conservation organisations and the Government to continue to work together to confront this disease through the following measures:
o Improved cattle testing (including use of the gamma interferon test) and monitoring of testing
o Stricter movement restrictions including pre and post-movement testing
o Improved husbandry and biosecurity on farms
o Continued research and trials for vaccine development
Stephanie Hilborne continued: “The Wildlife Trusts will continue to support cattle testing measures and promote good biosecurity and husbandry in our work with farmers.”
