Great to see and one close to our hearts having volunteered to man the centres during the 2006 season. Hope the volunteers are enjoying it as much as we did ...... and if any of your want to post us some of that carrot cake from the cafe at Glentress....
.
Anyway onto the actual news article:
Osprey Watch staff are "thrilled to bits" at the news that two osprey chicks have hatched in the Tweed Valley.
Staff first caught sight of the chicks this morning (21 May) and have been glued to the live CCTV cameras found at the two osprey viewing centres at Glentress Forest and Kalzie Gardens near Peebles.
It is thought that one chick hatched overnight and one very early this morning. A further egg is still to hatch and staff are keeping their fingers crossed that three chicks will be in the nest for visitors to see this bank holiday.
Emma Rawling, Osprey Centre manager said:
"This is a fantastic way to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of ospreys returning to nest in the Borders. We are all thrilled to bits and very excited at the news.
"We are especially pleased at the hatching because all the eggs were laid in such atrocious weather - it was actually snowing at the time. It is a real credit to the parents who have cared for their offspring and managed to hatch the eggs successfully. With the bank holiday approaching we are expecting lots of visitors to come and see the new arrivals at the centres."
Both centres are open from 10am- 5pm until the end of August when the ospreys migrate south to Africa for the winter. Kalzie Gardens is hosting a special wildlife day on Monday 26th as part of the bank holidays.
The Tweed Valley Osprey Project is a partnership involving Forestry Commission Scotland, Kailzie Gardens, RSPB Scotland, and is funded in part by Scottish Natural Heritage.
Ospreys were driven to extinction in Scotland by the early twentieth century but returned to breed in 1954. They first returned to the Borders to breed in 1998. There are only approximately 200 breeding pairs in Scotland, almost the entire UK population.
